Being at an elevation of
1000m Ouro Preto has an altitude adjusted
climate. It's not as hot as the Brazilian coast. The cobbled streets get
slippery in the rain so you'll need proper shoes more than havaianas here.
Ouro Preto (Black Gold) was a colonial gold rush town and was the Capital of Minas Gerais until 1897.
The main attractions here are the 13 colonial churches and 7 chapels. You can see them dotted around the hill tops. They are closed on Mondays.
Praça Tiradentes and Rua Direita are the center of town and perhaps the best place to start your exploration of Ouro Preto.
