Salvador was Brazil's first Capital until the mantle was passed to Rio de Janeiro in 1763. As the hub of the Brazilian slave trade Salvador is predominantly culturally African and the people are proud of it. Religions such as Candomble are still practiced.

Most of Salvador's Churches and Museums are clustered around Pelourinho in Centro (Cidade Alta). The beaches stretch outwards along the north zone of the city.
