The Tamar turtle sanctuary just north of Salvador is one of Brazil's flagship conservation programs. This award winning project started in 1980 protects all 5 turtle species that exist in Brazilian waters. The best way to get there is to take a day trip to Tamar, there is a old colonial era fort (Praia Forte) close by and several great beaches to try out. They have an excellent web site: www.tamar.org.br and we have produced a photo gallery for you to view.
